Sustainability

Sustainability: what does it really mean?

SUSTAINABILY

Sustainable Automotive Manufacturing: Why it Matters

Block deal with many countries that are focused on Sustainability, Environment and driving a Circular Economy that promotes a framework shift away from the old linear ‘’take-make-waste’’ towards a more modern regenerative system.  The Manufacturing methods that are considered sustainable in the Automotive industry and indeed, in the world of Block Automotive, are ones that focus on decreasing the impact on the environment through functional efficiencies whilst still maintaining profitability for both future growth and therefore supporting long term economic stability

This is more than a simple choice, today’s automakers are looking at strict emissions requirements and worldwide climate goals they must meet.

At Block, we embrace this requirement to make sustainability a necessity rather than an afterthought, consequently we are all charge with the responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint. But it’s not only manufacturers like Block, but all Manufacturers, worldwide, are also involved in this shift toward sustainability as we all consider:

  • Low emissions
  • Eco-aware Automotive Training rig production + distribution
  • Recycling at every opportunity
  • Sustainable practices
  • Affordability, longevity

This, in turn, makes the importance of transparency and environmental responsibility greater than ever, Sustainability is fundamental to how we do business. We contribute to the earth’s sustainability and societal development through business activities in cooperation with global society.

The global landscape is one that requires all countries to do their bit to protect the planet by making and introducing changes in their process to ultimately safeguard the planet for generations to come.

Block Automotive Limited, (hereafter referred to as ‘BAL’), seeks to ensure that public policy, societal needs, technology development, and consumer needs are aligned to the greatest extent possible.

Wanting to make the future brighter and doing things for someone other than ourselves are the principles behind our philosophy. This supports our sustained efforts to achieve the aims of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that ‘no one will be left behind’.

Energy efficiency is one of the top components when it comes to sustainable automotive Training Rig manufacturing. Manufacturers, such as Block who are at the forefront of Automotive Training Rig design and production have invested heavily in our 40,000 square ft, full and detailed refurbishing and redesigning of the work and social spaces.

Where possible we looked to preserve our historic building as it is to retain the heritage of our area. The factory was fully modernised from the inside out, with high preforming

Grid of 17 colourful icons representing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty, hunger, health, education, equality, clean water, and climate action.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the heart of the UN shared blueprint to Peace & Prosperity

Recycled thermal products, acoustic board, new heating systems with greater fuel efficiency v lower emissions, extensive rewiring and re-lighting using all the latest high output & low consumption LED lighting and emergency lighting units along with large expanse of Perspex glass to draw natural light into all areas therefore creating a working environment that was both pleasant and healthy to work in. The exterior of the building was then freshly wrapped in high-performance composite boarding to preserve the exterior aesthetics of this 100-year-old building which was original erected for the Lowestoft fishing fleet for drying nets.

And we’d be remiss if we missed the smart element. Evolutionary Tech is also being considered to further help our factor reduced carbon footprint aided by things such as AI-led systems to improve energy use, cut down on waste, and increase overall production efficiency. Such innovative practices not only reduce carbon footprints but can go a long way in decreasing long-term operational costs.

Recycled and Sustainable Materials

Opting for OEM recycled and sustainable materials is a practice that is transforming automotive production. Block Automotive and Automakers alike are more often sourcing recycled steel, aluminium, and plastics rather than virgin materials.

In addition, the use of natural, green manufacturing materials like plant fibres and plant-derived plastics are becoming more popular. These alternatives mean lighter vehicles, improved fuel efficiency, embracing alternative ‘net zero ‘fuel alternatives as a long-term solution ensuring more easily met sustainability goals throughout the life of the vehicle, from creation to end of life.

Our ‘human-centred’ approach

Ever since its founding, BAL’s core value has always been to contribute to society in meaningful ways, looking for easier ways to do things. This stems from the company founder’s motivation to create a business that supports his local community and family.

BAL still applies this ‘human-centred’ philosophy. At its heart is the concept that technology should contribute to people’s happiness and health. We are committed to promote and develop quality employment, a diverse and inclusive workplace, and improve society through sustainable innovation.

On our way to zero-emissions

We want to minimise the environmental impact of our activities and reduce it to zero where possible, while developing measures to contribute positively to the planet with the aim of achieving a sustainable and emission-free society.

In line with 100% CO2 reduction in all new vehicle sales by 2035 in Europe (EU, EEA and UK), our strategy is to reach carbon neutrality as soon as possible, through education and instruction we are looking to create a product line those nurtures and promotes conservation, maintenance and recycling. The timetable has been set out, so we will watch how it unfolds

Supply Chain

BAL pursues open and fair business and engages in sustainability initiatives through close collaboration with business partners to raise quality in terms of safety and customer satisfaction.

At BAL we work closely with our suppliers during manufacturing. As part of these efforts, we have implemented Basic Purchasing Policies according to the spirit of mutual benefit based on mutual trust.

To address the increasing interest in our supply chain, we have dialogues with suppliers. Before conducting business transactions, we contact suppliers to clearly spell out legal compliance in respect of human rights, environmental considerations. We share our sustainability stance and expectations with our suppliers, and request suppliers to manage their activities around these basic principles, where possible, these include: –

Business Ethics and Human Rights

Seeking “the happiness of someone other than ourselves” has always been a part of BAL’s Founding Principles.

One of our goals has now grown to “producing happiness for all”. In 2022, BAL generated its Human Rights Policy structured round the care and appreciation of is staff. It refers to and respects the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP) and promotes activities related to human rights based on the UNGP.

We are mindful that the essence of the UNGP is inherent human dignity, equality and universal entitlement to being treated with respect.

Whistleblower hotlines

BAL requests its Business Partners to promptly and in good faith report to BAL facts or suspicions regarding actual or suspected acts of corruption/bribery committed by employees, sub-contractors, consultants, etc., of Business Partners, BAL or any BAL entity.

Any report should be made to the BAL Compliance Officer Justin Lavery, (Finance Director) to BAL.

Business Partners can raise a concern anonymously.

Driving Sustainability

BAL actively look drive Sustainability, and as such we work closely with some of our leading companies in the BAL automotive supply chain. We collaborate to promote a common approach and leverage a common voice on sustainability topics in the supply chain. In 2021 we embarked on a strategy to tackle four sustainability challenges together with our suppliers: Carbon Neutrality, Sustainable Raw Materials, Workforce Well-being, and Circular Value Chain.

In these areas we seek to endorse and develop common standards, apply common compliance tools, and provide trainings to help suppliers improve their sustainability awareness and performance.

Our Sustainability Roadmap

Our Sustainability Roadmap recognises the widespread benefits that construction can generate; not just in sustainable lower carbon and greener designs and construction methods, but in a smarter supply chain, with a more diverse and inclusive workplace, in supporting communities and in stimulating national and local economic growth.

BAL are committed to playing our part in this global challenge, moving our business forward, sustainably, and in doing so, helping to build a better future. As we continue our journey to Net Zero, we plan to implement further measures in the short, medium, and long term. These will drive down emissions and help us to meet our 2045 target. We are also committed to improving the quality and accuracy of our data and reporting, to aid in the reduction of emissions and progress measurement. This will remain a key objective throughout the lifetime of our carbon reduction plan.

Data Quality / Confidence

The data used to generate this report has been collected from various sources from both within the company and using assumptions gathered by Net Zero International. These emissions have been converted to CO2e using GHG Protocol and BEIS frameworks and conversion factors for the relevant period.

Offsets As part of the commitment of BAL to target reductions in its GHG emissions and, ultimately, attain Net Zero the company will review and report all offsetting that it enters. All offsetting options will be considered and reported included, formally certificated schemes (e.g., Gold Standard) as well as more informal schemes. Where offsetting is done against informal schemes, details of the calculation logic will be reported.

How we achieve Sustainability and Environmental respect

BAL recognises that it has a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact including pollution and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods, with regular review points. We will encourage customers and suppliers to do the same where possible.

Policy aims.

The aim of this policy is to ensure that BAL are complying with all relevant regulatory requirements and minimising environmental impact wherever possible. We will do this though the following methods:

Production Materials

As far as possible, purchasing products and services that do the least damage to the environment We will ensure that any waste metals from the production process will be segregated and recycled. In addition, care will be taken to ensure materials purchased are cut to size and minimum quantities are ordered to reduce waste.

Packaging

If we happen to use any package, which is a rare event, we will try to reuse packaging where possible to reduce environmental impact. When purchasing packaging materials preference will be given to recyclable products. As we use our own specially designed fleet Euro 6 delivery vehicles which are operated by our train technicians/drivers, many deliveries will see no need for packaging, it is simply secure to the inside of our specially designed vehicle using only reusable strapping and webbing, which are themselves made of recycle webbing.

We strongly promote recycling in our workforce and have numerous recycling bins positioned in our workshop and office areas. We have clearly labelled signs around the bins to ensure staff are aware of what can and can’t be recycled.

We re-use stationery such as folders, lever-arch files and poly-pockets so that we are not throwing out items after one use, reducing the purchasing and demand for such products.

All our waste metals are separated out, and we have a dedicated company collect it for recycling.

Paper & Office supplies

We will try to always minimise the use of paper and all office supplies will be re-used and recycled where possible. When purchasing packaging materials preference will be given to environmentally friendly products and high priority given to recycled packing being used.

Energy and water

We will reduce the energy consumption across the site as far as practicable by ensuring all lights and electrical equipment are fully switched off when not in use. Our workshop has been fitted with low energy LED lighting, and our compressor is of an energy saving design. Energy consumption will be a consideration when purchasing new / replacement plant and machinery, as we have already seen, our new range of more eco efficient factor boilers boast impressive eco credentials along with environmental pleasing output figures.

Through the Carbon Charter scheme we will ensure that sustainable energy is used where possible and were not, off set schemes will be considered. We will also consider heating use with energy consumption in mind. Water use will be reduced where possible and all outlets will remain closed when not in use.

BAL remains mindful of the environment every day. Here are some more practices we have in place to reduce our impact on the planet:

  • Ensuring lights are turned off in rooms not being used.
  • Encouraging staff to car share, cycle or walk to work where possible.
  • Only printing essential items
  • Reusing scrap paper and any package recieved

Transportation

We will aim to reduce the need to travel where possible and will promote the use of travel alternatives through email/phone conferencing. We will make additional efforts to accommodate the needs of those using public transport or bicycles. We will aim to reduce transport CO2 by combining deliveries and demonstrations to the same or similar destination when possible.

Cleaning.

We will ensure that any cleaning materials used will be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Disposal/Recycling

All waste/recycling that leaves the site will do so via a properly licenced carrier and we ensure that waste transfer notes retained for a minimum of three years as required by legislation. Pollution We provide secure and contained storage for COSHH substances on our site and maintain spill containment equipment and trained spill responders to mitigate impacts where a spill event could occur.

Culture and Community

BAL want to ensure that all staff members are involved in the implementation of this policy to ensure a greater commitment and improved performance towards our environmental impact. We are committed to promoting environmental awareness among our employees and encouraging them to work in an environmentally responsible manner.

Carbon Footprint

BAL are working alongside the carbon trust to help us achieve a goal reducing our carbon footprint year on year. We have enrolled in a tree planting scheme with Ecology to help us to offset our carbon footprint.

The tree planting scheme contributes to re-forestation and conservation and provides employment across the world to reduce the impact of extreme poverty.

It allows us to play a part in helping restore the environment and enables us to work in partnership with our valued customers, with no additional effort on their part.

Becoming a more environmentally friendly company is very important to us.

This process helps us monitoring and objectives key performance indicators are monitored monthly, and trends analysed to help us set meaningful objectives for continual improvement BAL will set the environmental objectives at the annual top management review meeting held each year, at which time this policy, and environmental aspects and impacts will be reviewed and discussed.

Circular Economy

Circular Economy

Block Automotive Limited (BAL) recognises that sustainability and the transition to a circular economy are increasingly important considerations in the world of procurement.

Our approach is therefore based not simply on supplying high-quality automotive training equipment, but on maximising product life, reducing/irradicating waste, conserving resources and ensuring that the equipment we supply continues to deliver educational, environmental and economic value throughout its operational life.

Alignment with Circular Economy Legislation

BAL supports the objectives and principles underpinning various initiatives and Acts, such as the Circular Economy and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2022 and the wider initiative which pays witness to the transition from a traditional “take-make-use-dispose” economic model towards a more sustainable circular economy.

The 2022 Act provides a statutory framework supports the transition to a circular economy and places increased emphasis on waste prevention, resource efficiency, reuse, repair, recycling and extending the useful life of products and materials.

BAL’s objective would be to apply circular-economy principles throughout the product lifecycle — from responsible procurement and manufacture through delivery, operation, maintenance, repair, refurbishment and eventual end-of-life recovery.

Circularity by Design

BAL believes that the most sustainable piece of equipment is one that continues to provide useful service for as long as reasonably possible.

Our training systems are therefore designed with longevity, maintainability, repairability and continued educational relevance in mind.

Rather than adopting a disposable approach to educational equipment, we seek wherever practicable to provide equipment that can be maintained, repaired, supported and updated. This reduces premature replacement, limits unnecessary consumption of raw materials and provides the contracting authority with improved whole-life value.

This approach supports the fundamental principles of a circular economy by seeking to:

  • Prevent waste before it occurs;
  • Extend equipment service life;
  • Maintain products at their highest practical value for longer;
  • Repair rather than unnecessarily replace;
  • Reuse components and materials where appropriate;
  • Recover and recycle materials responsibly at end of life;
  • Reduce reliance on virgin raw materials; and
  • Continually identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact.

Sustainable Manufacturing and Materials

BAL already incorporates sustainability considerations within its manufacturing operations.

Where technically appropriate, recycled and sustainable materials are considered within production, including recycled steel, aluminium and plastics as alternatives to virgin materials.

Material purchasing and cutting are carefully managed to minimise production waste. Waste metals generated through manufacturing are segregated and collected for recycling, supporting the principle that valuable materials should remain within productive use rather than being unnecessarily disposed of.

This forms part of our wider commitment to resource efficiency and responsible manufacturing.

Product Life Extension, Maintenance and Repair

A significant environmental advantage of the BAL approach is our commitment to the continued support of the equipment that we have manufacture, we clearly demonstrate this by providing a no quibble 5-year warranty on every product that we design, fabricate and manufacture in our factory.

We recognise that circularity does not end when a product is delivered, therefore the aftersales support is essential. Maintenance, repair, component replacement, technical support and access to appropriate replacement OEM parts will and does significantly increase the operational lifespan of our training equipment. Our approach is therefore intended to reduce unnecessary whole-product replacement by allowing equipment to remain serviceable for as long as reasonably practicable.

Further to this we offer a dealer refurbishment program allowing older Block rigs, currently in circulation can be fully refurbished back to manufactures standard, using new and used OEM parts. They can then be returned to the users, complete with a manufacturer’s warranty, fit for service again for many years to come.

We also take back older Block trainers with a view to repurposing the units or selling them to other users for further Automotive training scenarios in the UK or abroad.

We sincerely believe that Bal’s ethos provides both environmental and whole-life economic benefits so the investment in capital equipment remains productive for longer, waste generation is reduced and the requirement to procure replacement equipment prematurely is minimised by buying from Bal.

Reuse Before Disposal

BAL applies the waste hierarchy throughout its activities and gives consideration to reuse before recycling or disposal wherever practicable.

This philosophy is demonstrated throughout our operations. Packaging (if used) is reused where possible. We only look to use recyclable packaging materials this also sees our own procurement team seeking out suppliers to Bal who promote and use recyclable packaging wherever possible.

Recycling is king in our business; all waste metals are segregated for recycling; and redundant materials are assessed for appropriate recovery routes within the business.

Our delivery model can also reduce packaging requirements. We will only use our own specially designed delivery fleet vehicles, which are manned exclusively by our own fully qualified and trained staff, that don’t just deliver equipment but are in fact highly trained Mechanical engineers who can and do provide full training with every trainer that we deliver. Our drivers use reusable strapping and webbing, to secure the training rigs to the transport which reduces or completely negates the requirement for disposable transit packaging.

Responsible End-of-Life Management

Where products, components or materials ultimately reach the end of their usable life, BAL’s objective is to maximise responsible material recovery and recycling.

Waste generated through our operations is managed through appropriately authorised routes, with waste metals separated for recycling and other waste streams managed in accordance with applicable environmental requirements.

Our approach is based on the principle that disposal should be the final option, not the first.

We would seek to work collaboratively with the contracting authority throughout the contract to identify opportunities for repair, refurbishment, reuse, parts recovery and recycling before equipment or components are considered waste.

Circular Supply Chain

BAL recognises that our environmental responsibilities extend beyond our own manufacturing facility.

We therefore work collaboratively with suppliers and business partners to improve sustainability performance throughout our supply chain.

We seek to encourage common standards, improve sustainability awareness and work with suppliers to identify opportunities to reduce carbon emissions, improve material efficiency and support circular-economy principles.

Environmental considerations are incorporated into our supplier relationships, and we increasingly seek to work with organisations that can demonstrate responsible environmental and social practices.

Our sustainability programme identifies four key supply-chain challenges:

  1. Reducing Waste Through Procurement

BAL would support the contracting authority in achieving environmental objectives throughout this contract by considering sustainability at procurement and specification stage rather than treating environmental performance as an end-of-life issue.

Where practicable, this includes:

  • Reduce – minimising unnecessary material consumption, packaging and waste.
  • Reuse – retaining products, components and packaging in productive use wherever possible.
  • Repair – supporting equipment to extend its operational life rather than encouraging premature replacement.
  • Refurbish – considering whether equipment or components can be restored or updated.
  • Recycle – segregating and responsibly recycling materials that cannot reasonably be reused.
  • Recover – seeking appropriate material recovery routes before final disposal.

This hierarchy provides a practical mechanism through which circular-economy principles can be applied to the contract.

  • Energy, Carbon and Transportation

Our environmental commitment extends beyond material use.

BAL continually seeks opportunities to reduce energy consumption across our operations. Measures include energy-efficient LED lighting, energy-efficient equipment, responsible heating controls and switching off electrical equipment when not required.

Transportation is also considered within our carbon-reduction strategy. Wherever practical, deliveries, demonstrations and customer visits are coordinated to reduce unnecessary journeys and associated CO₂ emissions.

Our broader Sustainability Roadmap establishes short-, medium- and long-term environmental objectives and includes a long-term Net Zero target.

  • Supporting Green Public Procurement Objectives

BAL understands that Irish public procurement can play an important role in accelerating the transition towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient and circular economy.

Our proposed solution supports these objectives through:

Long product life – equipment designed and supported for extended operational use.

Repairability – reducing unnecessary replacement of complete systems.

Resource efficiency – reducing waste during manufacturing and operation.

Responsible material selection – considering recycled and sustainable materials where technically appropriate.

Waste prevention – designing waste out wherever reasonably practicable.

Reuse and recycling – retaining products, components and materials within productive use.

Reduced packaging – including reusable transportation methods where appropriate.

Supply-chain engagement – encouraging environmental responsibility among suppliers.

Carbon reduction – continually seeking reductions in operational and transportation emissions.

Whole-life value – considering environmental and economic performance throughout the lifetime of the equipment rather than focusing solely on initial purchase cost.

  • Our Circular Economy Commitment

For Block Automotive, circularity means designing and supplying equipment with its entire lifecycle in mind.

Our objective is simple:

  • Use fewer resources.
  • Generate less waste.
  • Keep products operational for longer.
  • Repair and reuse wherever practicable. Recycle responsibly when materials reach genuine end of life.

BAL’s existing environmental policy recognises that our responsibilities extend beyond minimum legal and regulatory requirements and commits the business to reducing environmental impacts and continually improving environmental performance.

Our existing production policy also requires waste metals to be segregated and recycled and seeks to minimise material waste through appropriate purchasing and cutting practices.

These commitments are reinforced by our established sustainability programme, which identifies Carbon Neutrality, Sustainable Raw Materials, Workforce Well-being and Circular Value Chain as four core sustainability challenges addressed collaboratively with our supply chain.

Accordingly, BAL believes that our manufacturing philosophy, product-support model and environmental strategy are strongly aligned with the direction of Irish circular-economy policy and the sustainability objectives increasingly embedded within Irish public procurement.

We would bring these principles to the delivery of this contract, helping the contracting authority achieve not only a high-quality technical and educational outcome, but a solution designed to deliver long-term environmental, social and economic value.

Environmental Commitment

Environmental Statement

At Block we recognise that our activities, as with others can have an impact on the environment in terms of materials sourced and used, energy consumed, emissions and waste management.

So, it is a priority to use ethically sourced and repurposed material to do our part to manage our business for the benefits of the environment protecting it for the generations to come.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Create Block are committed to make every possible step to ensure that we operate within a clean, Healthy and Safe environment for all those attending or working on site with the company’s permission. We remain ever vigilant to prevent injury and or damage to company property, we operate a see it, report it, philosophy to proactive address any issues seen by our employees

AIR QUALITY

The very process of welding and fabrication and general machining can produce unwanted Fumes. Block have therefore and continue to invest in filtration equipment that protects and maintains the Health and Safety of its workforce whilst keeping a close eye on environmental output to manage and improve the air quality whilst managing down our carbon footprint. We must all seek ways to reduce and offset our carbon footprint so here at Block we are always looking for ways to do what we do better and cleaner. Whilst air and water are free, their value is beyond compare, so must all do are bit to mitigate further damage in the years to come

RECYCLING

We are supper keen on this, given the desire to throw away older items. We recognise that this is both non ecofriendly and a very serious problem

For the planet that we all call home. We have embraced a recycle and upcycle culture which we take great pride in promoting and reinforcing with clients and staff alike. Approach to our business making full use and repurposing vehicle components (where appropriate) that may be ideal for our projects and allow us to set the standard in repurposing otherwise, discarded parts.  So, our products provide vocational training whilst also providing an object lesson in sustainable production and product life cycle, the green way is the ONLY way.

Our Objective

Block Automotive Limited is committed to minimising the environmental impact of its activities, and to ensure that we continual look to improve our environmental performance.

To achieve these commitments, the company will:

  • Seek to enhance and preserve our working environment
  • Minimise our waste to landfill by recycling wherever possible
  • Seek to reduce solvent use where practicable
  • Raise environmental awareness by implementing an environmental training programme for all staff
  • Comply with all environmental legislation
  • Prevent pollution to air, water, and land
  • Encourage sustainable consumption associated with our activities to minimise unnecessary waste of electricity, fuel and materials.
  • Monitor progress and review the environmental programme annually
  • Consider the environmental credentials of our supply chain and source locally where practical
  • With our core objective being to focus upon identifying and addresses areas for continual improvement

At Block we have worked extremely hard to ensure our activities are kind to our environment making every effort to minimise of carbon footprint. In this pursuit we look to provide a working environment that is supportive of our staff, provides training, support, guidance and sets out to ensure their mental health and personal wellbeing and happiness.

In this process we actively encourage our TEAMS to always consider the environment we occupy and indeed the effect of our interaction with other businesses and the environments surrounding them, naturing a culture of mutual respect, care and understanding all focused to cultivate and nurture an Environmentally sympathetic and respectful work culture that encourages everyone to be an environmental warrior protecting what we all value the most, our blue planet.

In conclusion

We are all charged with the responsibility to make changes in the way we live our lives and the way we treat this fragile planet we call home. Our continued misuse and ill treatment of the planet will not go without consequences to us our children and generations of children to come.

BAL believe that whilst our actions cannot not change everything in the world, whilst we try and change, and we encourage others to change also, collectively we can and will make a difference, enlightenment through example is key.

I noticed a relevant quote, by Dr.Piers Sellers, American Astronaut

‘’To make the changes we need to make and to reach a safer future, we will need the resources of everybody here — the scientists, the policy makers, and the industrialists — all working together towards a common goal. And that goal is a planet that can continue to support life.’’

I think this statement truly embrace everything that BAL, and many others are trying to do to preserve, protect and nurture our planet Earth.
