Here at Block, the development of our automotive hydrogen vehicle trainer is gaining traction as the ‘go-to solution’ to delivering high-level education to Automotive students. While our range of Hybrid and electric vehicle trainers continues to be in high demand, hydrogen fuel cell vehicle Trainers are also now being sought for their diverse training opportunities afforded by a fully operational training rig in a classroom environment along with zero harmful tailpipe emissions and quick refuelling capabilities.
Recent media coverage on the BBC showcases the Government’s conservative attempts to support and drive the Hydrogen revolution to ensure its coverage increases substantially throughout the UK. In February 2024, the BBC reported that a pilot plant supplying hydrogen fuel for vehicles could be built in Exeter by 2026 (see the link below). This is on the back of other reported news and articles clearly showing that Hydrogen vehicle solutions within the UK are set to grow and become a regular sight on British Roads.

Current Status of Hydrogen Vehicles in the UK: relatively small numbers of hydrogen-powered cars, such as the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, are available for sale in the UK. The limited availability of hydrogen refuelling stations has hindered the widespread adoption of these vehicles. As alluded to above, this situation is set to change with a renewed commitment to drive the move to hydrogen power cars more or a reality; this will no doubt be further encouraged as we learn of plans for more hydrogen-powered models from brands like BMW, Land Rover, and Vauxhall in the next five years.
There are clear advantages to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. They offer benefits such as quick refuelling times (around 3-5 minutes), zero tailpipe emissions (producing only water vapour), and high energy conversion efficiency compared to internal combustion engines. The versatility of hydrogen production from various sources like wind and solar makes it a viable alternative fuel option.
Of course, this comes with its challenges and future Outlook. One key challenge for the UK’s hydrogen car industry is the low availability of refuelling infrastructure. As mentioned, we are all more aware now that heavy investment in production facilities, refuelling stations, and distribution networks is crucial to overcome this barrier.
Block has actively worked on the Hydrogen training space for some time, having the first generation of Hydrogen training rigs, which have been received well thus far. They ably assist in the effective and comprehensive delivery of education to students in a classroom environment.
